Maritime Museum

The Brunei Darussalam Maritime Museum was opened in March, 2015. It is located on the banks of the Brunei River, where the ancient city of Brunei was situated from the 14th to 17th centuries. Within three different galleries, the exhibition demonstrates the Sultanate’s role as a centre of flourishing trade in ancient times. A shipwreck found in 1997 with various artefacts, mostly porcelain, is exhibited, as well as objects found in the archaeological site of Kota Batu, which was the centre of trade from the 14th to the 17th centuries.

In order to demonstrate the close trading ties between Brunei and China, a joint maritime exhibition took place in 2015 with Quanzhou Maritime Museum, displaying Chinese artefacts from centuries of trade between the two cultures.
