The expert meeting on the ‘Architecture and Monuments’ theme of the Thematic Collection of the Cultural Exchanges along the Silk Roadswill be held online on 4 October 2022. The meeting, which will bring together renowned experts in the field of architecture and monuments from across the world, is organized by UNESCO in collaboration with the Nanjing Creative Center with support from the Nanjing World Historical and Cultural Cities Expo.

The meeting aims to identify the main elements, methodologies, and technologies for best highlighting the Silk Roads common heritage relating to the theme of Architecture and Monuments within the Interactive Atlas and multivolume Thematic Collection UNESCO is currently developing.

Architecture and monuments represent one of the major fields that have been a vector of dialogue and exchange between different cultures, exchange which has resulted in the construction of mixed architectural masterpieces recognized today as important elements of the shared heritage of different cultures around the world. This volume of the Thematic Collection will retrace the historical and geographical imprints of architectural exchanges along the Silk Roads and illustrate the pathways and networks that facilitated the circulation of ideas, beliefs, and knowledge along these historic routes.

A better understanding of the rich history and shared legacy that flourished along the Silk Roads, as well as a better knowledge of the mutual influences between different people and cultures along these routes is not only essential for reinforcing intercultural dialogue and mutual understanding, but also indispensable for achieving sustainable peace and development in the current globalized and particularly post-Covid world.
